Take a closer look at the T-shirt. We really like its subtlety. It’s a fun way to wear red, white & blue and still look cool and understated. The technique for creating the flag with fabric strips is versatile, too. You can use any color of bias fabric strips to make all kinds of striped flags.

Supplies to Make a DIY 4th of July Refashioned T-Shirt with Bias Tape

The key tools for making this T-shirt are the Dritz bias tape makers – these are so handy to use for making bias fabric strips. Once you start playing around with them, you will want to add bias tape to all kinds of sewing and quilting projects. Watch this quick YouTube video to see how easy it is to use them.

First you’ll cut your fabric into strips to insert into the tape makers.

Then, use the bias tape makers to make your fabric strips.

These are what the finished bias strips will look like – note the varying widths that you’ll create by using the 2 different sized tape makers. Note that smaller fabric prints work best.

Follow the above guide to make a flag diagram on your T-shirt. Use a water soluble marking pencil to draw the outline of the flag and its stripes.

Add flair to the sleeves and give them a more flattering look by adding fabric tabs that are secured with Dritz plastic star snaps on each sleeve.
